The MMRC Model

MMRC research efforts are conducted in three multi-site cores spanning the most cutting-edge areas of science.

Chair: Rafael Fonseca, MD, Mayo Clinic

The Genomics Core analyzes myeloma tissue accrued into the MMRC Tissue Bank to develop an improved understanding of the genetic complexities of multiple myeloma and to identify potential molecular targets related to the disease's onset and progression. These findings will prove invaluable in our efforts to develop better, more effective treatments for myeloma and will lay the groundwork for the development of individualized therapies.

Chair: Leif Bergsagel, MD, Mayo Clinic

The Validation Core validates novel and combination treatments for myeloma and identifies and validates new, druggable targets for the disease. In order to accelerate these efforts, the MMRC Validation Core has created and a panel of 12 extensively characterized myeloma cell lines with full genetic and biologic characterization. This unique resource now serves as an optimal tool to screen potential new drug candidates and help prioritize them for further study by the MMRC, as well as an invaluable resource for industry partners pursuing drug screening projects.

Chair: Paul Richardson, MD, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

The Clinical Trials Core conducts multi-site clinical trials of novel and combination therapies and associated correlative analyses. Committed to conducting clinical trials as efficiently as possible, the MMRC has developed several uniform documents designed to significantly streamline contract negotiations, one of the greatest delays in a clinical trial’s launch. These documents - including an Informed Consent Form, Clinical Trials Agreement, and Correlative Sciences Agreement - allow the Consortium to remain singularly focused on its clinical research efforts by eliminating the need to negotiate or revise documents. To further expedite these efforts, the MMRC has identified a preferred Contract Research Organization and is hiring Clinical Research Coordinators for its Member Institutions as needed.
